motivation is easier with a tribe
Is your January motivation starting to wear off? If so, you’re not alone. Longtime readers already know that motivation is fleeting. I have some good news though! We’ve figured out some ways to make it easier.
Research shows that nothing sustains motivation like belonging to a tribe. You are the company you keep, right?
One of the most effective ways to achieve your goals is to join a culture where your desired behavior is the normal behavior.
Want to get fit? Join a gym full of people that prioritize working out.
Want to be a reader? Join a book club.
Want to be someone that loves to cook? I don’t know, I still hate cooking so let me know if you figure it out 😂
Surrounding yourself with people that are working towards the same goal can be very powerful. Instead of going at it on your own, your pursuits become those of the group. Your solo identity becomes linked to those around you and therefore much stronger.
Coaching. If your desired behavior is the norm in the group, that means many people have already accomplished what you're working towards and can help you! Learn from people with experience.
Accountability. Belonging to a tribe = built in accountability. Once you're part of the community, others will notice when you don't show up. Knowing that someone is counting on you is one of the greatest motivators that exists.
Whatever it is you want to get better at, find people that are already doing it well. The shared goal, coaching, and accountability will keep you far more motivated than you could ever be on your own.
